SWAMC is working with our partners to offer low-cost energy audits for small businesses including fishing vessels in Southwest Alaska. Audits determine how you can reduce operation and maintenance costs, and raise the safety and value of the vessel. USDA-funded audits are tailored to each fisher and vessel, based on the systems that are already being considered for replacement or are of concern. The audit includes a detailed analysis of vessel operations, including refrigeration and propulsion loads. Audits can include assessments and cost savings from installing:
- RSW – hydraulic or generator powered
- Optimized and properly‐sized hydraulic system
- LED lighting
- Insulation in fish hold, and more
Fishers who are eligible for a low-cost energy audit must fish and store their vessels in the Aleutians, Bristol Bay, or Kodiak. Once an audit has been conducted, vessel owners can apply for the USDA REAP grant, which covers 25% of energy efficiency retrofits for small businesses. If the energy analysis of the vessel shows that replacement of equipment, motors, lighting, etc. will provide energy savings, then a vessel owner will be eligible for the grant.
