Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference is offering low-cost targeted energy audits and access to a USDA REAP improvement grant to commercial fishing vessel owners in Alaska*. A commercial fisher looking to purchase and professionally install an RSW system for $50,000, for example, would be reimbursed $12,500 by the grant.
SWAMC manages this USDA-funded program with the support of partners Information Insights and Energy Audits of Alaska.
Who is eligible?
Commercial fishers that fish and store their fishing vessels in Alaska*.
What types of vessels should apply?
Any type of commercial vessel or purpose can be considered—e.g. seiner, longliner, gill netter, trawler, tender.
What is in a targeted energy audit?
Vessel audits are targeted to the owner’s goals. The energy auditor will ask the owner what systems are being considered for replacement or are of concern to the vessel owner. Audits can include assessments and cost savings from installing:
- RSW – hydraulic or generator powered
- Optimized and properly‐sized hydraulic system
- LED lighting
- Insulation in fish hold, and more
If you are only considering repowering your vessel, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org with details about your vessel.
How much does a fishing vessel audit cost?
Vessel owners must pay a portion of the audit cost. A reference schedule of costs is below. For specific quotes, please register here.
How do I use the audit?
Upgrade your vessel! Apply for the USDA REAP grant, offered twice annually. It covers 25% of energy efficiency retrofits for small businesses. If the energy analysis of the vessel shows that replacement of equipment, motors, lighting, etc. will provide energy savings, then a vessel owner will be eligible for the grant. For questions on other funding options, email email@example.com.
Registration: To register, complete the online form or fill out and email the Commercial Fishing Vessel Energy Audit Registration Form to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Dates: The energy audit program is scheduled through 2019, with the possibility of extension. Commercial fishers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
